What to Do If You’re in an Accident

An accident can be stressful. Knowing what to do next can help protect your safety and make the repair process easier.

1. Check for Injuries

If anyone is injured, call 911 immediately. If necessary, contact the police or Virginia State Police and remain at the scene until help arrives.

2. Exchange Information

Provide the investigating officer with the information they need and ask how to obtain a copy of the police report. You may need the report when filing an insurance claim.

Be sure to collect the following information from the other drivers and passengers involved:

  • Names
  • Addresses
  • Phone numbers
  • Insurance information
  • Vehicle information

3. Document the Accident

If it is safe to do so, take photos of:

  • The accident scene
  • Damage to all vehicles involved
  • The surrounding area and road conditions
  • Any other details that may be helpful when filing your claim

4. Don’t Drive an Unsafe Vehicle

Never drive a vehicle that may be unsafe because of accident damage. If you’re unsure whether your vehicle is safe to drive, have it inspected or arrange for a tow.
